Turbine Repowering
We understand the evolving landscape of renewable energy and the need for sustainable solutions. At Gael Energy, turbine repowering stands at the forefront of our commitment to enhancing wind energy efficiency and sustainability across Scotland and the UK.
What is repowering?
Typically, a wind turbine’s lifecycle lasts 25-30 years. However, as wind energy technology advances rapidly, older turbines can become less productive and more costly to maintain. A proactive approach to address this challenge is repowering — the strategic upgrade or replacement of aging wind turbines with modern, more efficient models in order to generate more electricity from the same wind speeds.
Recent regulation changes allow for repowering on FIT and ROC accredited wind turbines with far greater capacity machines. These changes must be made with consideration of planning permission and grid connection. These processes can be confusing, however, we are able to guide you through them step by step or carry out on your behalf.
What are the benefits of repowering?
Enhanced Efficiency – Newer turbines feature advanced technology that significantly boosts energy output compared to older models. Repowering ensures maximum energy generation, therefore optimising performance.
Improved Reliability – Aging turbines are more prone to breakdowns and require frequent maintenance, leading to costly unplanned downtime. By repowering, wind turbine owners can enjoy enhanced reliability with modern, reliable equipment.
Cost Savings – Repowering offers long-term financial benefits by reducing maintenance expenses and increasing energy production. With improved efficiency and reduced downtime, wind turbine owners can achieve a higher return on investment over the lifespan of the project.
Environmental Impact – Upgrading to advanced, more efficient turbines not only aids in the reduction of carbon emissions but also helps alleviate environmental impact. Aligning with the UK and Scottish Government, repowering presents a significant opportunity to achieve net zero targets.
Technological Advancements – Repowering allows owners access to the latest advancements in wind energy technology, including improved turbine design, enhanced software controls, and innovative remote monitoring systems.
Repowering Case Study
Valued clients Irene and Jim Fowlie recently entrusted Gael Energy to revive their 50kW AOC turbine in Aberdeenshire, which had remained idle for the last two years. Manufactured by Rengineers and a perfect fit for repowering, this involved the successful installation of a BestWatt turbine.
This installation was backed by a market-leading 'Garant' Operations and Maintenance contract, a strategic alliance that sees Gael Energy support Rengineers in rolling it out to wind farm operators across the country. Rengineers' ground-breaking Garant contract ensures that all conceivable costs associated with wind turbine maintenance are covered by an annual fixed fee, with operators being compensated in full for any loss of earnings beyond a 48-hour shutdown period.
"It's not just about powering turbines; it's about powering innovation and sustainability in the renewable energy sector. Irene and Jim's site, now equipped with the BestWatt turbine, serves as a shining example of repowering small turbines such as Harbon, AOC, and Endurance." - Hamish Campbell, Gael Energy's Managing Director
