Gael Energy Appointed by Ventient Energy to Replace a Slew Ring on a 23-year-old Bonus 600 at Novar Windfarm

Gael Energy recently visited a 34-turbine Highland wind farm — that supplies electricity to 10,300 houses — to carry out a significant contract that involved the replacement of a slew ring on a 23-year-old Bonus 600.

With a track record of carrying out major component works for small and medium wind turbines, Gael Energy was approached by Ventient Energy and appointed as the principal contractor/designer which involved sourcing the necessary replacement hardware, consumables and lifting equipment, as well as preparing all of the required documentation for the works to be completed under CDM regulations.

Once onsite, it was evident that the mating faces between the rotor shaft and gearbox had been compromised. The decision was quickly taken to replace both components, with additional scope agreed. With the nacelle safely on the ground, the gearbox and slew ring was successfully replaced, ready to be reinstalled the following day.
